What to Pack for a Sahara Desert Tour in Morocco

From layers for cold desert nights to the one thing everyone forgets, a practical packing list for your Merzouga desert adventure.

What to Pack for a Sahara Desert Tour in Morocco

Packing for the desert is all about contrasts: hot days, cool nights, bright sun and fine sand that finds its way everywhere. You do not need much, but a few smart choices make a big difference. Here is what we suggest after years of guiding travellers across the Erg Chebbi.

Clothing: think layers

  • Light, breathable clothes for the day (cotton or linen)
  • A warm layer, a fleece or jumper, for the evening
  • A light jacket, especially from autumn to spring
  • Long sleeves and trousers protect from the sun and the cool nights
  • A scarf or chèche, perfect against sun, wind and blowing sand

Footwear

Closed shoes or trainers are ideal for walking and 4x4 days. Sandals are nice around camp, but the sand can be hot at midday and cool at night, so bring both if you can.

Sun and skin

  • High-factor sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat or cap
  • Lip balm and a small moisturiser, the desert air is dry

Useful extras

  • A reusable water bottle
  • A power bank for your phone or camera
  • A small torch or headlamp for the camp at night
  • Any personal medication
  • A small bag for the essentials you want with you in the dunes

What we provide

On our overnight journeys, the desert camp is equipped with bedding and blankets, and we carry plenty of water. If you are ever unsure what to bring for your specific tour and season, just ask, we are happy to send a tailored list before you arrive.
