Camel Trek vs 4x4: How to Explore the Erg Chebbi

Both are iconic ways to experience the dunes. Here is how to choose, or why you might want a little of both.

Camel Trek vs 4x4: How to Explore the Erg Chebbi

When people picture the Sahara, they often imagine a camel crossing a dune at sunset. But a 4x4 opens up the desert in a different, exhilarating way. So which should you choose? Honestly, it depends on what you want to feel.

The camel trek: slow, timeless, romantic

Travelling by camel is gentle and quiet, the way the desert has been crossed for centuries. The pace lets you take in the scale and silence of the dunes, and arriving at a camp by camel at sunset is wonderfully atmospheric. It is ideal for shorter distances and for soaking up the romance of the Sahara.

The 4x4: spectacular and far-reaching

A 4x4 lets you cover much more ground and reach places a camel simply cannot, hidden corners, distant viewpoints and the wider desert beyond the main dunes. Driving across the Erg Chebbi is genuinely thrilling, and it is the best way to combine the dunes with the lesser-known sites we love to share.

Why not both?

Many of our travellers enjoy a mix: a 4x4 to explore widely during the day, and a short camel ride into the dunes at sunset for that unforgettable arrival at camp. On a private, tailor-made journey, you do not have to choose, we build the day around what you most want to experience.

A note on comfort

Camel riding is easy and suitable for most people, though it can feel unfamiliar at first. If anyone in your group prefers not to ride, the 4x4 is a comfortable alternative for the whole experience. Just let us know, and we will arrange the day accordingly.
