The Sahara with Family: Travelling to Merzouga with Kids
The desert is one of the great family adventures. Here is how to make a Merzouga trip magical, and easy, for children and parents alike.

A trip to the Sahara can be one of the most memorable things a family ever does together. Children are captivated by the dunes, the camels and the stars, and with a little planning, a desert journey is very doable with kids of almost any age.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Because our journeys are private and tailor-made, we shape every day around your family, shorter activities, plenty of breaks, and the freedom to slow down whenever you need to. There is no fixed group to keep up with and no rigid schedule.
What children love most
- Riding (or just meeting) the camels
- Running and rolling down the soft dunes
- The thrill of a 4x4 ride across the sand
- Sleeping in a desert camp and counting shooting stars
- Mint tea, music and the warmth of a desert welcome
Keeping it comfortable
We use comfortable vehicles and camps, carry plenty of water and snacks, and plan around the cooler parts of the day. For younger children, a single night in the dunes is often the perfect amount, long enough for the magic, short enough to stay easy.
Practical tips for parents
- Bring layers, desert nights can be cool
- Sun protection for everyone, all day
- A few familiar snacks for the little ones
- Let us know any dietary needs in advance
A family that welcomes families
We are a family ourselves, two generations sharing the desert, and we love welcoming other families. Tell us the ages of your children and what they enjoy, and we will design a Sahara adventure that delights the whole family.
