Marrakech to Merzouga: How to Reach the Sahara
The road from Marrakech to the dunes is part of the adventure. Here is what the journey looks like, and why a guided crossing beats doing it alone.

Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, in Morocco’s deep south-east. From Marrakech it is a long but spectacular journey, and one of the most scenic drives in the country. Here is how it works.
How far is it?
Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 560 km. In a single push it is around 8 to 9 hours of driving, but almost nobody does it that way, and you shouldn’t. The route crosses mountains, valleys and oases that deserve to be part of the trip, not rushed past.
The route, in short
- Over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass
- Past Aït Ben Haddou and the kasbahs near Ouarzazate
- Through the Dadès or Todgha gorges and palm valleys
- On to Erfoud, Rissani and finally Merzouga
Should you do it in one day or several?
We strongly recommend spreading the journey over two or three days. The landscapes change constantly, and the stops, a kasbah, a gorge, a quiet village, are some of the best parts of the trip. Our "Gateway to the Desert" and "The Great South" journeys are built exactly around this idea: the road is not a transfer, it is the experience.
Why travel with a local guide?
Self-driving is possible, but a guided crossing means no stress over directions, no missing the small detours that make the trip, and real local insight at every stop. You also travel in a comfortable private vehicle with someone who knows where to pause for the best light, the best tea and the fewest crowds.
Coming from somewhere else?
We also arrange journeys from Ouarzazate and Fes, and tailor-made routes from wherever you are starting. Tell us your starting point and how many days you have, and we will design the ideal way to reach the Sahara.
