The Best Time to Visit Merzouga and the Sahara Desert

Spring nights, autumn light or winter stars? Here is an honest, season-by-season guide to choosing when to visit the Moroccan Sahara near Merzouga.

The Best Time to Visit Merzouga and the Sahara Desert

The Sahara is breathtaking in every season, but the experience changes a great deal across the year. As people born by the dunes of Merzouga, we have watched the desert through countless seasons, and the honest answer to "when should I come?" depends on what you are looking for.

Spring (March to May): the sweet spot

Spring is, for most travellers, the perfect time. Days are warm without being punishing, evenings are mild, and the light at sunrise and sunset is extraordinary. It is the season we most often recommend for a first visit, especially for families and anyone who wants to spend long hours outside in comfort.

Autumn (September to November): warm days, clear skies

Autumn is the quiet favourite. The intense summer heat has faded, the skies are clear, and the nights begin to cool, ideal for a night in a desert camp under a sky thick with stars. Crowds are thinner than in spring, which means an even more intimate experience.

Winter (December to February): cold nights, magical stars

Winter days are pleasant and sunny, perfect for 4x4 adventures and walking the dunes. The nights, however, can be genuinely cold in the desert, sometimes near freezing. With the right camp and warm bedding it is a wonderful, dramatic season, and the clarity of the winter night sky is unforgettable.

Summer (June to August): for the heat-lovers

Summer in the Sahara is hot, often above 40°C in the middle of the day. It is still possible to visit, but we plan activities around the early morning and the evening, with rest during the hottest hours. If you travel in summer, an overnight in the dunes is especially rewarding once the heat softens.

Our advice

If you have the choice, aim for spring or autumn. Whatever season you pick, tell us your dates and we will shape the rhythm of each day around the weather, that is the advantage of travelling with a local guide who reads the desert.
