The experience

Starting in Ouarzazate spares you the long mountain crossing and leaves more time for the south itself. From the film-famous kasbahs you wander into the Skoura oasis, its earthen towers half-hidden among the palms, then follow the road through the Dades and Todra gorges, where rock walls close in and rivers run cool. By the time you reach Merzouga, the land has turned to pure sand. A camel carries you into the Erg Chebbi for a night in camp, dinner, drums and a ceiling of stars. Throughout, Hassan keeps the group small and the days unhurried.
